Retired Clark County School District educator Pamela Hicks recently was appointed UNLV's new director of school and community relations/Millenium Scholarship coordinator.
"We are pleased to have Pamela Hicks serving in this newly created position because she has considerable knowledge of both UNLV and the school district, which will be integral in her role of helping local students transition to the university," said Stuart Tennant, UNLV's assistant vice president for enrollment management/dean of admissions.
In her role as director of school and community relations, Hicks will help with the recruitment of students to UNLV from the local school district.
"I will be responsible for working as a liaison between the university and the school district providing information to both entities about selection, recruitment, and retention of students," Hicks said.
As coordinator of the Millennium Scholarship program, Hicks will be responsible for the tracking of Millennium Scholars at UNLV and for providing outreach about the program to the school district.
"I will follow the current scholarship recipients at UNLV and establish various communication elements to ensure their understanding of the scholarship and its requirements," Hicks said. "In the school district, I will be speaking to parent groups, school faculty, and district officials about the Millennium Scholarship and providing them with critical information about the scholarship and its intricate components."
Hicks began working at the university in January as a faculty member in the College of Education. She holds a bachelor of science and a master of education degree from UNLV.
Previously, Hicks worked for more than 30 years with the Clark County School District. She taught English at Western High School, served as dean of students at Basic High School, was assistant principal at Valley High School, principal at Kenny Guinn Junior High School, and director of the district's secondary curriculum. She completed her career with the school district serving as an area superintendent.
Hicks also served as president of UNLV's Alumni Association from 1994 to 1998 and served 14 years on the association's board. In 1998, she received the Alumna of the Year award for her many years of service on behalf of the university and its students.
"When I graduated from UNLV and began teaching at the high school level, I found myself being an advocate for my university," Hicks said. "I enjoyed talking to students and parents about the tremendous advantages that can come from university attendance and the fine education they could receive at UNLV. The period of time I served on the UNLV Alumni Association board allowed me to develop an even greater appreciation for this fine institution.
"I can honestly say that to become a member of the UNLV community as faculty and, especially, to serve in my new role as director of school and community relations is a dream come true."
