Cherr?e Moraga, a renowned playwright, poet and essayist who has received national recognition for her explorations of ethnicity, feminism and sexuality in literature, will offer the keynote address for UNLV's celebration of Women's History Month.
Moraga currently serves as Artist-in-Residence in the departments of drama, Spanish and Portugese at Stanford University, where she teaches creative writing, Chicano/Latino literature, Xicana-Indigenous Performance and dramatic writing.
Moraga, winner of the prestigious USA Rockefeller Fellowship for literature in 2007, is perhaps best known for her 1983 book, "Loving in the War Years," now considered a classic of both feminist and Chicana literature. Her plays, including the famed "Heroes and Saints," have been performed to critical acclaim throughout the nation, and she has published extensively as an essayist and poet. She is also the co-editor of "This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color," winner of the 1986 Before Columbus American Book Award and re-released in a 20th anniversary edition in 2002.
The event is sponsored by the UNLV Women's Studies Department and is free and open to the public.
UNLV is hosting a series of events to commemorate Women's History Month, including student productions of "The Vagina Monologues," films, lectures, and awareness events.
