The Rev. Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, noted author, professor and social critic, delivered the keynote address as hundreds gathered at UNLV today to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The event was co-hosted by MGM MIRAGE.
"By highlighting Dr. King's work, MGM MIRAGE and UNLV aim to promote diversity and unity in the Las Vegas community," said Debra Nelson, MGM MIRAGE vice president of corporate diversity, communications & community affairs.
Dyson, dubbed the "hip-hop intellectual" for his pioneering explorations of rap music and its impact on American culture, is the author of 15 books and currently serves as University Professor at Georgetown University. His critical studies of race, religion, popular culture and contemporary issues in the African-American community led to his being named a two-time winner of the prestigious NAACP Image Award, among Ebony Magazine's 100 influential black Americans and Essence Magazine's 40 most-inspiring African-Americans.
"Dr. Dyson is among the most gifted orators," said Christine Clark, UNLV vice president for diversity & inclusion. "As an ordained minister, he reflects the historical legacy of Dr. King while at the same time drawing attention to controversial issues of diversity in America."
As a leading institution of higher education, UNLV is home to rich diversity among its faculty, staff and students. By hosting an event highlighting the legacy of Dr. King's work in the context of current issues, UNLV aims to promote a more inclusive, welcoming and affirming community.
The event was sponsored by MGM MIRAGE, the UNLV Office of the Vice President for Diversity & Inclusion, the UNLV President's Office, Human Resources and the campus chapter of the NAACP.
