New music ensemble Nextet presents its final concert of the season at 7:30 p.m. on March 22 in the Rando-Grillot Recital Hall of the Beam Music Center. Titled Reflections As One, the compositions are written to depict energies, emotions, memories, or personal voyages. Much of the concert also will feature premieres, with the composers in attendance.
Nextet guest saxophonist and composer Russ Peterson performs his work Trio for Viola, Alto Sax and Piano with UNLV faculty violist Kate Hamilton and Nextet guest pianist Jay Herschberger. Composer Todd Mason will be in attendance and will talk about his work Duo for Violin & Viola, featuring Hamilton along with UNLV violinist Ambroise Aubrun. Graduate student composer Tasos Peltekis performs guitar on his new piece Voyage, featuring cellist Jeayoung Jo.
Other works on the program include Gene Koshinski’s As One, featuring UNLV graduate student percussionists Ryan Bond and Andrew Naughton; Tan Dun’s Eight Memories in Watercolor, featuring UNLV graduate student pianist Zhenyu Yang; and Catherine Likhuta’s Out of the Woods?, featuring UNLV faculty Bill Bernatis (horn), Aubrun (violin), and Katie Leung (piano).
