The Nevada Conservatory Theatre production of The Heiress opens November 9 in the Black Box Theatre at UNLV. The play, written by Ruth and Augustus Goetz, is based on Henry James' novel Washington Square.
This gripping drama of romance and revenge takes place in the parlor of Dr. Slope's house on Washington Square, New York in the 1850s. His daughter, Catherine, is a shy, awkward young woman who is taken in by the attention of Morris Townsend, a charming but ruthless fortune hunter. When Catherine's father forbids her to marry Morris, she plans to defy her father and elope. Even though Catherine becomes a victim of her fortune, she provides an ironic twist.
Sarah Norris, a third year MFA candidate in directing, directs The Heiress. The set is by Ashley Poteat, with costumes by Zhenni Li and lighting by Lee Terry.
Those featured in the cast are Chelsea Brim as the heiress, Ryan Fonville as her suitor, and Joe Hammond as her father. Others in the cast are Bridget Prieto, Susan Lowe, Dana Martin, Clif Yada, Mary Catania and Elisabeth Bokhoven.
