More than 120 top Latino high school juniors from several states will participate in the National Hispanic Institute's Collegiate World Series July 5-8 on the UNLV campus.
The program is designed to provide Latino youths with the skills they need to succeed in the college admissions process. It will focus on such subjects as standardized tests, interviews, financial aid, letters of recommendation, and essays.
Representatives from admissions offices at a number of universities, including the U.S. Air Force Academy, UNLV, Cornell University, and Ohio State University, will offer students guidance on the admissions process.
The program takes the format of a baseball game and includes drafts, team competition, umpires, and coaches. The college admissions representatives act as coaches and draft students to teams according to their GPAs, PSAT scores, and class rankings.
Students from Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, and Virginia are expected to attend the event, which will be held at different locations on campus.
The National Hispanic Institute (NHI) is a non-profit organization that conducts leadership training programs for top Latino high school and college students.
