UNLV's Inaugural Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration, which was held on Jan. 21 in the Moyer Student Union Ballroom at UNLV, will air on Jan. 28 and 30 at 9 p.m. on Cox Communications Channel 70.
Delivering the keynote address of the event was the Honorable Michael Douglas, Nevada's first African-American Supreme Court Justice. Douglas has served in the state for 22 years with the district attorney's office and as a judge in the Eighth Judicial District Court. In November 2004 he was elected to a full term on the Nevada Supreme Court.
The program opened with the complete audio of Dr. King's historic "I Have A Dream" speech, accompanied by a moving photographic montage. Attendees were also treated to special vocal performances by UNLV music students, who chose pieces they felt best reflected Dr. King's memory and legacy.
The inaugural Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration at UNLV was sponsored by the offices of the Vice President for Administration, Student Multicultural Programs, the Committee for an Inclusive and Just University, and Human Resources and Diversity Initiatives.
