The UNLV Performing Arts Center is proud to present Lorin Maazel, music director of the New York Philharmonic, as he conducts the Symphonica Toscanini at 8 p.m. on Saturday, January 27 as part of the Charles Vanda Master Series. Maazel chose to conduct and direct the Symphonica Philharmonic because of its "quality level and enthusiasm."
Throughout his impressive career, Maazel has led more than 150 orchestras in over 5,000 opera and concert performances. He became music director of the New York Philharmonic in September 2002. Previously, he served as music director of the Symphony Orchestra of the Bavarian Radio (1993-2002). He has held positions as music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony (1988-96); general manager and chief conductor of the Vienna State Opera (1982-84)-the first American to hold that position; music director of The Cleveland Orchestra (1972-82), appearing with the orchestra in some 700 performances and seven international tours; and artistic director and chief conductor of the Deutsche Oper Berlin (1965-71). He was named honorary member of the Israel Philharmonic in 1985 when he conducted its 40th anniversary concert. He is also Honorary Member of the Vienna Philharmonic and is the recipient of the Hans von Bulow Silver Medal from the Berlin Philharmonic.
Tickets to the Symphonica Toscanini conducted by Lorin Maazel are $50, $65, and $95 and can be purchased at the Performing Arts Center Box Office at 895-ARTS (2787) or by visiting pac.unlv.edu. Student rush tickets are $13 each and available one hour prior to each event, based on availability and with valid student I.D. UNLV faculty and staff discounts also are available. A $1 facilities fee, in addition to the ticket price, is charged on all Performing Arts Center tickets. The box office is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Founded in 1976, the Performing Arts Center at UNLV continues to be Southern Nevada's premier performing arts venue.
