International peace scholar Michael Nagler will present "The Promise of Peace: Exploring Nonviolence and Human Potential," at 7 p.m. on June 3 in John S. Wright Hall, Room C-144, at UNLV.
The lecture, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the The Saltman Center of Conflict Resolution at UNLV's William S. Boyd School of Law and the Las Vegas Catholic Worker.
Nagler, professor emeritus of classics and comparative literature at the University of California, Berkeley, is co-founder of the university's Peace and Conflict Studies program and author of "The Search for a Nonviolent Future." The book, which won a 2002 American Book Award, analyzes non-violent demonstrations from around the world and how they have affected conflicts throughout modern history.
Nagler is a student of Sri Eknath Easwaran, founder of the Blue Mountain Center of Meditation, whose books "Ghandi the Man," and "Nonviolent Soldier of Islam," have been widely published and translated throughout the world.
The Saltman Center for Conflict Resolution was established in 2003 at the William S. Boyd School of Law in order to provide a venue for advanced study of the nature of conflict and the methods through which conflicts may be resolved. The work of the center encompasses conflicts arising out of regional, national, and international concerns, and involving both the public and private sectors.
