The UNLV Performing Arts Center is proud to host its inaugural classical guitar competition at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 18. The winner of the competition receives a handmade Antonio Picado Model #49 guitar donated by Dr. Mitchell & Pearl Forman.
"We are thrilled to host this competition and showcase the amazing student talent throughout the valley," said Lori Pullen, interim executive director of the Performing Arts Center. "The classical guitar program at UNLV is one of the best in the country, and we look forward to hearing our next generation of classical guitarists."
Students 18 years of age and younger currently enrolled in a southern Nevada school are invited to register. Current school identification or proof of attendance will be required at competition check-in.
In the preliminary round, 20 students will each present one piece, not to exceed five minutes. Repertoire must be selected from the traditional classical guitar music library and must be performed from memory. (Observers will not be permitted.)
In the final round, the top three students will each present two pieces, not to exceed 15 minutes in total. Performances in the final round are open to the public.
Students will be judged on technique, form, musicianship, repertoire, and performance. Judges' decisions are final.

The UNLV Performing Arts Center is Southern Nevada's first home for the arts: it opened in 1976 and celebrates its 42nd season this year. It hosts a variety of performances and events and is home to productions presented by the Nevada Conservatory Theatre, UNLV School of Music, UNLV Dance, Desert Chorale, and the Southern Nevada Musical Arts Society. The UNLV PAC also is pleased to host various Clark County School District Fine Arts festivals and concerts.
