Due to the gymnasium fire at Roy Martin Middle School and the subsequent investigation that began on July 5, approximately 120 middle school students participating in UNLV's Center for Academic Enrichment and Outreach (CAEO) GEAR UP Summer Camp will be relocated to nearby Chuck Minker Sports Complex ( 275 North Mojave Road).
The summer camp will begin as scheduled on July 11, thanks to the efforts of Michael L. Collins, City of Las Vegas Leisure Services Coordinator at Chuck Minker Sports Complex, and Regina Adams, Principal of Roy Martin Middle School. Due to space limitations, the camp staff is working diligently to alter the schedule of activities to fit accommodations at the new location.
GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a federally funded program designed to assist young people with academic challenges and introduce them to college. GEAR UP programs, administered through CAEO, are conducted at six middle schools and seven high schools in the Clark County School District.
During GEAR UP Summer Camp, students take part in academic studies, recreation, dance, aquatics, cultural history, and career exploration programs for three concentrated weeks. The Roy Martin Middle School Summer Camp program is scheduled to run through July 28.
For more information, program participants and families should contact Yvonne Berry, Roy Martin GEAR UP Site Coordinator for CAEO at (702) 821-1586.
