Legendary national politician Bob Dole will present "Leadership and Values in the 21st Century" on April 17 as part of the acclaimed Barrick Lecture Series at UNLV, now in its 25 th year.
The presentation is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and will be held in the Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall at UNLV. Although the event is free and open to the public, tickets are required and will be available starting at 10 a.m. April 1 at the Performing Arts Center Box Office on campus. Tickets are limited to two per person and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
One of our nation's most recognized political figures, also known for his candor and prairie wit, Kansas Senator Bob Dole has dedicated a lifetime of work to public service. One of only sixteen people ever to serve as Senate Majority Leader, Dole has also been a Republican presidential and vice presidential nominee, Republican party chairman, Senate Finance Committee chairman, a member of the House of Representatives, a state legislator and a county attorney during his remarkable political career. Prior to his retirement from the Senate in 1996, he was the longest-serving Republican Senate Leader in the history of the United States.
Dole was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1997 as a tribute to his leadership, character and contributions to the nation.
In post-political life as an advocate, commentator and author, Dole has continued to be an indelible part of the American social landscape. Following the attacks of September 11, 2001, Dole joined forces with former President Bill Clinton to co-chair the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund, assisting with the educational needs of devastated families. In 2003, he was appointed Honorary Co-Chair of the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation, part of President Bush's USA Freedom Corps. A decorated veteran, Dole served as Chairman of the National World War II Memorial, which opened to the public in 2004.
Dole is the author of two best-selling books of political humor, "Great Presidential Wit: I Wish I Was in the Book" and "Great Political Wit: Laughing (Almost) All the Way to the White House." Senator Dole has also shared his unique brand of wit and insight with television audiences via numerous appearances on "The Late Show with David Letterman," "Saturday Night Live,""The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" and "Late Night with Conan O'Brien," among others. During the 2000 elections, he served as a regular commentator on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart."
Dole was raised on the plains of Kansas, and gained admiration across party lines as a tough, common-sense conservative. He has served throughout his career as an advocate on behalf of the disadvantaged and Americans with disabilities, and as a leader in foreign affairs. He is married to the Honorable Elizabeth Hanford Dole, current Senator from North Carolina.
Most recently, Dole has published a third book, "One Soldier's Story: A Memoir," telling the story of his harrowing experience during World War II, and efforts to overcome life-threatening injuries and rebuild his life.
The Barrick Lecture Series, funded through a grant from philanthropist Marjorie Barrick, presents nationally and internationally known speakers from a variety of fields each year at UNLV.
