Folksongs of the U.S. labor movement and urban architecture will be topics of upcoming forum lectures at UNLV.
On April 20, Corey Dolgon, chair of the sociology department at Worcester State College, will present "Folksongs and the U.S. Labor Movement: A Commonwealth of Toil."
A long-time labor activist, Dolgon will discuss the role of folksongs in the U.S. labor movement and will demonstrate how the collective act of singing can help develop solidarity and collective identity. Audience participation is requested.
On April 26, Michael Sorkin, professor of architecture at City College of New York, will present "Urban Architecture: The City After Now."
During the lecture, Sorkin will examine the prospects for developing sustainable and democratic urban forms in the post-9/11 era. Sorkin's contributions to the debate over rebuilding the World Trade Center site, as well as his work on planning the future of Jerusalem , are considered by many to contain valuable insights about the future of urban architecture.
The lectures will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History. All University Forum lectures are free and open to the public. No reservations are required.
The University Forum lecture series is sponsored by UNLV's College of Liberal Arts and is underwritten by the Jerry Kalafatis Lodge Charitable Foundation and the UNLV Foundation.
