Students from Roger Bryan and Keith & Karen Hayes elementary schools will dedicate a "millennium" bench on the UNLV campus April 26.
The students, who are in the gifted and talented education (GATE) programs at their schools, raised $1,200 through activities such as bake sales and recycling to purchase the bench, plaque, and two trees.
The dedication ceremony will take place at 10:30 a.m. at the east entrance of the Carlson Education Building. The public is invited to attend.
The students have studied the topic of time throughout the year, thus prompting the idea of a bench to mark the new millennium, said Allison Berman, the GATE specialist at Hayes Elementary.
As part of the dedication, each student will have the opportunity to place an individual miniature time capsule into a larger time capsule that will be buried beside the bench. Plans call for the capsule to be unearthed in 10 years. A reunion for the students has been tentatively scheduled for June 5, 2010, at the bench.
Following the dedication, the students will have a chance to speak with UNLV Student Ambassadors about planning for a college education and about the Millennium Scholarship Program.
