Commercial Roofers Inc. has pledged $10,000 to create a scholarship fund for the UNLV School of Architecture. Established through the UNLV Foundation, the Commercial Roofers Scholarship will be awarded annually to a junior or senior in the School of Architecture. A major requirement is that the recipient participate in a research project on a roofing topic -materials, application, or waterproofing.
Scott Howard, principal of Commercial Roofers Inc., said, "Our objective in establishing the scholarship is to help architectural students and enhance their awareness of many possibilities in the roofing industry. With the advances made in roofing in the past few years, there are many new products and application techniques that are fertile ground for research."
According to Michael Alcorn, UNLV School of Architecture director, roofing is an integral part of the process of all buildings. "We are extremely pleased that Commercial Roofers Inc. made this scholarship available to the architecture students," added Alcorn. "This is the type of business partnership that improves the quality of our programs and, most importantly, helps students."
The Commercial Roofers Scholarship will be initiated in the 1997-98 academic year. Applications for the scholarship, including research project, proposals will be accepted from students until Dec. 1. The candidates will be screened by a committee headed by Alcorn and the award recipient will be announced in January. The scholarship recipient will conduct the roofing research project during the spring semester and present the results to graduating seniors in May. Project reports will be archived in the school's library for reference.
