In a first of its kind collaboration, the UNLV College of Fine Arts and Meow Wolf's Omega Mart, 3215 S. Rancho Dr., joined forces to bring MFA candidate Karla Lagunas to the Omega Mart multiverse. Lagunas created an installation titled, Meta-Telos III, in room D207 of Dramcorp HQ.
Thematically, this temporary space explores our relationship to painting and the process of the artist. The curtains in the room are designed to be slid back and forth across the walls by visitors and Lagunas welcomes the scuffing of feet and will respond over time to these human influences as she continues to evolve the room over a series of painting activations during the exhibition. The artist will be on-hand painting and interacting with explorers Friday evenings in August with a final stroke of her brush on Saturday afternoon September 14.
The on-site painting schedule is 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. on July 26; Aug. 2, 9, 16, 23, 30; Sept 6, and 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Sept. 14.
Lagunas is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice challenges the boundaries and hierarchies that often exist between different genres, mediums, and forms of artistic expression. Her work creates immersive installations that dissolve the borders between inner and outer worlds, inviting viewers to connect with their own emotions and senses in new and unexpected ways. Informed by her experiences with neurodiversity, Lagunas is committed to promoting a greater understanding of emotional landscapes through her art.
Lagunas has exhibited her work in a variety of local and regional galleries, including Clark County galleries and obscure Mojave landscapes. She has also collaborated on experimental performances for local theater companies and co-organized the non-hierarchical performance art event RADAR. Currently an MFA candidate at UNLV, Lagunas holds a BA in art and art history from the same institution.
Through her art, Lagunas shows us that hope and healing are possible even in the face of pain and adversity. By dissolving borders and hierarchies, she creates new pathways to joy, connection, and renewal. Her work invites us to imagine new possibilities and to embrace new perspectives, reminding us that the limitations we encounter in our lives may be more malleable than we realize.
