WHAT: Noted civil rights scholar, author and Harvard law professor Lani Guinier will be the featured speaker as UNLV and MGM MIRAGE commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
WHEN: Thursday, January 22, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Guinier is scheduled to speak from 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., with reception and book signing to follow

DETAILS: Lani Guinier is a noted authority on issues of race, gender and democratic decision making. Known for her groundbreaking approach to questions of affirmative action in both higher education and in the democratic process, Guinier in 1998 became the first woman of color appointed to a tenured professorship at Harvard. She also worked in the Civil Rights division at the U.S. Department of Justice and served as assistant counsel and head of the Voting Rights Project at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Guinier has authored or co-authored five books, numerous scholarly articles and holds 10 honorary degrees.
The event is free and open to the public and will include remarks by UNLV Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion Christine Clark, MGM MIRAGE Vice President of Corporate Diversity and Community Affairs Debra Nelson and musical performances.
