The Nevada Council on Economic and Entrepreneur Education (NVCEE) and the UNLV Center for Economic Education have announced that a team of students from Chaparral High School has won the statewide championship in the 2004 state Stock Market Simulation competition.
The students from the winning team will be recognized for their achievement Tuesday, May 18, by Nevada Secretary of State Dean Heller during a ceremony at their school.
Each team participating in the Stock Market Simulation game is given a hypothetical $100,000 in seed money at the start of the competition. The team then invests that money over the 10-week course of the game with a goal of making the largest possible profit. The winning team from Chaparral turned its $100,000 into $219,985.
The winners for the three divisions of competition all are from schools in Southern Nevada . They are:
- High School Division: the Chaparral team, headed by teacher Robert Bloom.
- Middle School Division: a team from Las Vegas Day School , headed by teacher Jeffery Segel.
- Elementary School Division: a team from Dondero Elementary School headed by teacher Joan Yumul.
The game is designed to teach students about the workings of the free-market system and reflects the state's standards for economics education in grades kindergarten through 12. More than 1,000 teams from across the state participated in the event. The game is sponsored by the NVCEE, administered by the Center for Economic Education at UNLV, and sponsored by the secretary of state's office. Heller's office provides funding for team fees from fines it collects from securities fraud violators.
