Several authors of the recently published book The River Underground: An Anthology of Nevada Fiction will give a reading and will sign copies of their book at UNLV on Sept. 17.
The event, which is free and open to the public, is scheduled to take place at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History.
UNLV English department professors Doug Unger and Richard Wiley will host the event, which will include readings from UNLV English professor John Irsfeld and John Ziebell, who is a recent graduate of UNLV's master of fine arts in creative writing program.
The University of Nevada Press published the book, which was edited by Shaun T. Griffin, a Virginia City poet. The book includes a collection of 25 stories, all written by Nevada authors. Settings for the stories range from rural Nevada to rural post-revolutionary China and from the neon of Las Vegas to the hills of Appalachia. Characters include a pair of Mormon teenagers, a Shoshone Indian, and an aging African-American jazz musician.
