UNLV students and campus leaders celebrate with groundbreaking ceremony for two new buildings on campus, the new Moyer Student Union and the new Student Recreation Center.

North Field on the main UNLV campus. The North Field is located north of the Central Desert Complex, west of Beam Hall, and east of the Lied Library.
Background
This is a ceremonial groundbreaking for two major additions to campus and among the most significant capital projects in UNLV's history. The ceremony will be largely centered on students and include a significant amount of student participation, as these two new buildings are dedicated to improving services to the UNLV student body.
In addition to UNLV students, faculty, and staff, guests will include state and local officials, alumni, community leaders, as well as project architects and contractors. Features of the new additions to campus will include:
Recreation Center
- $54 million project
- 184,000 square feet
- New "Rebel Wellness Zone"
- State-of-the art fitness facilities
- Group fitness studios
- Full-length basketball courts
- Racquetball and volleyball courts
- Indoor and outdoor pools
- Full-service Bistro with outdoor patio
- Student Health Center
- Indoor jogging track
- Opening winter of 2006
Student Union
- $45 million project
- 135,000 square feet
- Expanded recreation and meeting space
- New student organization offices
- Significant expansion of dining space
- New food court with eight eatery options
- Social and study lounges
- New outdoor amphitheater
- Expanded computer labs
- 300-seat theater for movies and events
- Student Life staff offices
- Opening summer of 2006
