The Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art welcomes "Plural" artist and scholar Catherine Borg at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 11. Watch as Borg unpacks her "Scouted" series, a re-contextualization of location shots behind the classic Martin Scorsese film Casino (1995). Combining historical research and a screening of her own work on video, the artist addresses the hidden labor of the culture industry and the connections it creates between the spectacle Las Vegas presents to the world and the network of private spaces where we live and work. Join us at the Barrick to explore the complexities of our city’s historical record.
The evening's program includes a screening of video works by Borg made between 2003 and 2010 including: "All-American, Experiment Phantom Area" (with Amy Yoes), "I only have stars for you; you only hold stars for me," and "Self-tending" with 2017 score.
Ê×Ò³| Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» the artist: Baltimore-based artist Catherine Borg uses photography, video, and other media to reposition her audience within the narratives of recognizable cultural phenomena. The works included in "Plural" are part of Borg’s project "Scouted: An Inadvertent Archive from the Search for a Cinematic Vegas," which appropriates and re-contextualizes materials from UNLV Special Collections. The images, originally created by location scouts, have been reframed to expand the archival record of Las Vegas to include life "off the Strip" and to consider the labor and byproducts of the culture industry. Her work has been presented internationally, with exhibitions and screenings at the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art; and the Contemporary Art Center in Las Vegas.
