Jose Montoya, the versatile artist, poet, and musician, will speak at UNLV on April 14.
Montoya will be at UNLV to meet with students in English professor Patricia Geuder's Chicano literature course. Members of the public are invited to join the students for this free event, which is set for 4-6:30 p.m., in John S. Wright Hall, Room 103.
Montoya, who retired from California State University, Sacramento, after 27 years with the university's art department, paints, writes poetry and songs, and performs with his band, Jose Montoya y Casindio.
"I think the public will find his presentation very interesting," Geuder said. "He provides a beautiful blend of information and entertainment."
Some of his poetry can be found in the book El Sol Y De Abajo. Currently, he is working on a book about his experiences in the Navy.
His Pachuco paintings have received national acclaim, and his music can be heard on his band's compact disc, A Pachuco Portfolio, which was released last summer.
Montoya recently was nominated as poet laureate of Sacramento. Additionally, he is the founder of the nationally recognized Barrio Arts program and one of the founders of the Rebel Chicano Art Front, also known as the Royal Chicano Air Force.
