UNLV will be awarding two $20,000 Wal-Mart Competitive Edge Scholarships to incoming freshmen for the 1999-2000 academic year.
The award of these scholarships is based on academic achievement, community service, and leadership. In order to be eligible, students must choose as a major a field related to manufacturing, industry, or technology.
Students applying for the scholarships for the 1999-2000 academic year must complete and return their applications no later than Feb. 15.
"This will be the sixth year that UNLV has participated in the Wal-Mart Competitive Edge Scholarship program," said Cheryl Dedrickson, UNLV's assistant director for scholarships and special projects. "The Wal-Mart scholarships are the largest scholarships we have to offer and already they have made a difference in the lives of nine current UNLV students."
Wal-Mart chose UNLV as one of 138 universities and colleges across the nation to benefit from the scholarship program.
"We didn't approach Wal-Mart; they came to us," Dedrickson said. "We were delighted and honored to be selected.
"With UNLV having such reasonable tuition rates, the $5,000 a year more than covers the yearly cost of tuition, fees, and books for a student who is a Nevada resident," she said, noting that annual tuition, fees, and book costs for an in-state resident attending school full time is estimated to be $2,500.
The Wal-Mart Competitive Edge Scholarship already has resulted in awards totaling $180,000 to UNLV students, she said.
Among the criteria a student must meet to be considered for the scholarship are:
-- Having an ACT score of at least 27 or an SAT score of at least 1100.
-- Having a high school grade point average of at least 3.5.
-- Being ranked in the top 10 percent of one's high school graduating class.
-- Demonstrating leadership and community service.
Additionally, students at all the schools across the nation participating in the Wal-Mart Competitive Edge scholarship program must declare a major in one of the following fields: computer science, computer information systems and quantitative analysis, industrial and technical education, biological and agricultural engineering, chemical engineering, computer systems engineering, electrical engineering, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, food/poultry science, transportation and distribution, or industrial marketing.
