Biography

Fatma Nasoz is an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science. Her research interests are in machine learning, deep learning, and human-computer interaction.

Her research has focused on deep learning analysis of data across numerous domains like health, education, finance, and genomics. She co-leads the Genomics Acquisition and Analysis Core that supports the research projects funded by an $11.4 million National Institutes of Health grant awarded to Nevada Institute of Personalized Medicine to establish a Center of Biomedical Research Excellence at UNLV. She is also a co-principal investigator on a Teledyne-Brown Engineering grant to develop computer and video-based learning tools for the cadre as well as for the International Space Station payload developers at NASA.

From 2011 to 2024, Nasoz served as the director of data science at The Lincy Institute, where she steered computer and data science research to inform the institute's data collection, management, analysis, and visualization efforts. She spearheaded data and technology initiatives, collaborated with local organizations to enhance their IT and data management capacities, and maintained a focus on high-quality, low-cost systems.

Nasoz is passionate about increasing the number of women in computer science. In 2017, she was part of the team that led the initiative to launch the first Girls Who Code Club at UNLV, which provided instruction in programming fundamentals, web development and design, mobile development, and robotics to female students from local high schools.

She is affiliate faculty with the Nevada Institute of Personalized Medicine as well as the Learning Sciences program within UNLV's Department of Educational Psychology and Higher Education.
