Spring break is moving week for University Police Services, Southern Command. The department will move into its new facility on the ground floor of the University Gateway Parking Garage March 15-18. Additional office space on the second floor of University Gateway’s office building will house the department’s emergency management office.

The new buildings will bring a variety of improvements to University Police Services, including:

• A permanent Emergency Operations Center that can be set up quickly to respond to emergencies. It also can serve as an emergency preparedness training facility.
• A new, fully modernized dispatch communications facility with state-of-the-art radio communications
• An enlarged property and evidence vault
• Expanded and improved locker room facilities for female and male officers
• Additional offices and workspace for all staff as operations expand in the future

“This facility moves the department closer to my goal of achieving a world-class service organization that will set the standard for institutional policing nationwide,” said Adam Garcia, director of University Police Services Southern Command.

Business Operations

While the move will affect some business operations, patrol operations will continue without interruption. Student security evening escorts services will not be impacted by this move. The RebelSAFE Alert System will continue running through the move and staff will be able to activate the system if any campus emergency should occur.

All business offices at Police Services will be fully operational until 3 p.m. March 15. At that time, the office computers and telephones will be disconnected in preparation for the move. All computers and telephones for these offices are expected to be up and functional by 8 a.m. March 18. Again, none of these systems will impact 9-1-1 response or police dispatch communications.

The move may impact the delivery of some services during spring break week as staff settle into their new offices. Services such as police report copies, fingerprinting, notary services, and online property registration are not expected to be impacted.

Lost and found services and access to property in the department's evidence vaults will still be available. However, there may be some delays retrieving items. The contents of the property vault will not move into the new UNLV Gateway building until later in April. Community members needing access to property are encouraged to contact the records office to set up an appointment in advance and allow for a 24-hour window for the acquisition of property. The University Gateway project construction began in 2016 with a 610-space parking garage on the east side of Maryland Parkway across from Greenspun Hall. The parking garage was completed in 2016. Construction of the office building is nearing completion. In addition to police services, plans call for the building to become home to the UNLV Graduate College and the Office of Community Engagement. The public-private development is meant to enhance the Midtown UNLV corridor.
