Portrait of Barbara Cloud

Pioneers of the Press

Before her passing, professor emerita of the Hank Greenspun School of Journalism and Media Studies Barbara Cloud published her book chronicling the history of newspapers and print media in the frontier West and the role those publications played in the economic development of the region.

The late Barbara Cloud, a longtime journalism and media studies professor at UNLV, lived in Australia during the 1960s. Her time there gave her insight into what it was like for the Western pioneers who longed for news of home. (R. Marsh Starks and Aaron Mayes/UNLV Photo Services)
