Nanette Meyer began working at UNLV’s College of Education over 11 years ago and is now an administrative assistant IV. She is the third-place recipient of this year’s Classified Employee of the Year Award. With a fair amount of regular responsibilities — everything from handling faculty needs to assisting with graduate assistant assignments — she keeps the Department of Teaching and Learning organized and running smoothly.
“I help faculty by completing conference travel reimbursements or ordering needed research items,” says Meyer. “I also help the department in coordinating office moves and work with UNLV personnel to help make the department and college a better place to work in.”
In the past few years, she’s served as proctor for the Carlson Education Building, chair of the safety committee and as a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council and Classified Staff Council.
Outside of work, Meyer enjoys taking photos of landscapes and nature. “I like to travel and explore different areas in Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado.”
P.G. Schrader, chair of Teaching and Learning, praised Meyer for her ability to collaborate with other departments on projects and her success with special programs.
“Mrs. Meyer is the cornerstone of our department,” says Schrader. “We are grateful for her and value her. We would not be able to function without her, and our experiences at UNLV are enhanced by her efforts.”
Where are you from originally, and how did you come to work at UNLV?
I moved to Las Vegas from Greeley, Colorado, where I worked at the State Farm Insurance regional office as a team lead/trainer. After moving to Las Vegas, I was lucky to be hired as an administrative assistant II to fill an open position with the Department of Teaching and Learning and have evolved in my position since being hired in 2013.
How do you feel about being recognized as a Classified Employee of the Year?
I’m ecstatic and honored to be recognized as a Classified Employee of the Year. Thank you for the recognition.
Outside of work, what’s something you enjoy doing in your free time?
I enjoy going to Aviator baseball games or to Colorado Rockies games if I’m in Colorado.
What’s something you really enjoy about your job?
I love my job and enjoy the people I work with. I like the challenges of my job, and I’m not afraid to take on new challenges.
If this award came with a $50,000 bonus, where would you travel and what would you do?
Wow, if this award came with a $50,000 bonus, I would take a long cruise to Alaska and then travel across Canada for about a month.
Advice for new employees?
Be patient in learning and be open to current employees’ advice. Possibly find a mentor that can help provide answers to your questions.
Recent favorite show?
I can’t wait for The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch and Resident Alien shows to watch each season.
