For over half a century, the UNLV faculty and staff have come together to support our students through the Holiday Card Scholarship campaign. This time-honored tradition has awarded scholarships to more than 50 UNLV students, empowering them to pursue their educational aspirations.
Chalinee Karawek, a computer science major, was one of the recipients for the 2022-23 academic year. She expressed her appreciation to the generous supporters, saying, "Your contributions made me feel supported and inspired throughout my journey. Thank you for all your hard work!"
This cherished tradition traces its roots back to 1967 when a group of young staff initiated the Holiday Card Tree project. It started as a simple way for staff to exchange season's greetings with each other and the budding UNLV community.
The idea was spearheaded by the retired foreign language professor Don Schmiedel and his wife, Grace. Speaking about the beginnings, Schmiedel shared, "It began to keep faculty from feeling obligated to send cards to one another because we were all just starting off, and we didn't have a lot of money."
Over the years, the holiday card exchange evolved into a beloved tradition among the faculty and staff. It took on a charitable purpose, inviting both current and retired faculty and staff to contribute to student scholarships. To date, this popular campaign has raised a remarkable $160,000 for scholarships, making higher education more accessible for students for 56 years.
The 2023 recipient of the Holiday Card Scholarship is , a nursing student. Acundo said, "I'm truly grateful for this scholarship. It has provided me with the opportunity to continue pursuing my passion in nursing and will fuel my determination to finish my final year with strength and purpose."
