The Center for Academic Enrichment and Outreach has received funding from the FY2016 Title III Asian American Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions (AANAPISI) Program for a project. The funding totals $1.75 million over five years.
Thus, for 2016-17 to 2020-21 The Center will be home to another Title III AANAPISI project. This new AANAPISI STEM project annually serves 180 UNLV undergraduates, of whom:
- At least 50 percent will be Asian-American or Native American Pacific Islander (AANAPISI) students;
- No less than 67 percent will be low-income individuals;
- All will be STEM undergraduates (students majoring, minoring, or pursuing a professional certification in science — including mathematical, information, and health sciences— engineering, or in mathematics or science education)
- All will be students who are at risk of educational failure or otherwise in need of special assistance and support.
All AANAPISI STEM project participants will receive services based on their need for academic support in order to persist in their degree programs, earn postsecondary credentials, and enroll in post baccalaureate studies. AANAPISI project services will include:
- Tutoring;
- Counseling (i.e., academic, undergraduate financial-aid, career, and graduate/professional-school admissions and financial-aid), delivered by academic coaches who are STEM graduate students at UNLV
- Support for undergraduate research (student and faculty stipends for research and conferences)
- Access to a textbook and academic-productivity-device lending library
- Difference-education interventions
- Frequent, ongoing academic-progress monitoring.
