Rochelle Hines and Dustin Hines (both Psychology) were awarded an NIH R15 grant through the National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) for a project, Early Mechanisms Mediating the Organization of the Axon Initial Segment Impact the Formation of Axo-axonic Synapses.
The $431,046 grant will fund research to advance our understanding of how specialized and powerful synapses on specific compartments of neuronal cells form, and what role these synapses play during typical and atypical brain development. This project also supports the inclusive training of undergraduate and graduate students focused on neuroscience research at UNLV, which is consistently ranked as one of the nations most diverse campuses. Rochelle Hines is the PI, while Dustin Hines is the Co-I.
