Nancy Lough (Educational Research, Cognition & Development), Joanne Goodwin (Women's Research Institute of Nevada), Carol Harter (Black Mountain Institute), and Peg Rees (Educational Outreach) participated in the panel discussion "" in April. The panel, which included Judith Sweet, codirector for the Alliance of Women Coaches, looked back at the progress and challenges of the 40 years since Title IX passed in 1972. While it is widely known as the law supporting women's athletic teams, the legislation also dramatically improved the experiences of all women in education. Title IX prohibits discrimination based on sex in education programs and all activities that receive federal financial assistance. Some of the forms of discrimination that Title IX prohibits include sexual harassment, the failure to provide equal opportunity in athletics, and discrimination based on pregnancy. The panelists examined the impact of Title IX, its history, and its continued relevance.
