Jay Tan (Nursing) received recognition from the mayor of Cebu City, Philippines, as an Outstanding Cebuano during the city’s Charter Day Testimonial Dinner. The city of Cebu recognizes individuals and institutions who display exemplary behavior, extraordinary heroism, bravery, and selflessness in defense of moral principles. Tan earned the honor by establishing an awareness campaign in his hometown designed to destigmatize mental health care, and developed a clinic for the town’s residents to receive mental health services.
Tan also earned the Outstanding Alumnus Award from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professionals. The accolade honors a recipient’s distinguished contributions to his or her profession, as well as service to the university and to the community at large. The university bestowed the honor to Tan for founding a mental health non-profit organization, Help4Hope, that works to decrease the stigma attached to mental illness and provides outreach to communities about mental health issues. Additionally, Tan established a program to help jobless Nevadans re-enter the workforce as certified nursing assistants that has helped more than 200 people, and developed the nurse apprentice program of Nathan Adelson Hospice through a grant from the MGM-Mirage Foundation.
