Jared Oestman (Political Science) published "" in International Interactions. The article identifies which countries voluntarily deploy their service members to the most violent locations within United Nations peacekeeping operations. The research shows that countries highly motivated to ensure the effectiveness of an operation take on greater risks by sending more peacekeepers to violent areas. However, the study also reveals important disparities in the nature of U.N. member states' contributions to peacekeeping efforts. Countries that expend relatively fewer resources on their militaries provide significantly more military personnel to fulfill frontline roles. Democratic countries also send fewer troops than nondemocratic countries to these positions.
