Federick Ngo (Educational Psychology and Higher Education) has received a $49,978 award from the William T. Grant Foundation for his project, "Embedded Counseling for Community College Students in ESL Programs: A Case Study at an Immigrant-Serving Institution."
As ESL students may be more unfamiliar with college than their peers and face structural challenges in accessing academic resources (e.g., linguistic struggles), increased and targeted advising may be an effective intervention that boosts the academic success of these students. Focusing on one immigrant-serving community college in California, Ngo will examine through a mixed methods study the impact of a college counseling intervention on ESL students’ academic outcomes and on psychosocial outcomes such as engagement, sense of belonging, and mattering.
