Christian Jensen and Dan Lee (Political Science) published an article, "," in the Journal of Contemporary Central and Eastern Europe. They theoretically demonstrate the conditions under which majoritarian features, such as high election thresholds or bonus seats for the plurality winner, in otherwise proportional electoral systems can backfire and lead to more extreme governments. To stress that this is not simply a theoretical possibility, they analyze recent elections in Poland, Hungary, and Greece to show how majoritarian rules contributed to the legislative power of extreme, populist parties.
