Three types of federally funded work-study programs provide students with the opportunity to work while enrolled at UNLV. Most jobs are located on UNLV’s campus and are available to undergraduate, graduate, and professional students with financial need. The three programs include Federal Work-Study, America Reads, and America Counts. The benefits of federal work-study include gaining employment which can be in a student’s field of study and/or career path and valuable job skills. Federal Work-Study provides jobs for undergraduate and graduate students with financial need as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

America Reads and America Counts Programs provide students with the opportunity to tutor preschool and elementary school-aged children in reading and math throughout Clark County.

Salary

Federal Work-Study wages are taxable by the Internal Revenue Service for federal income tax purposes. Once a student is hired into a Work-Study job and has completed all needed payroll paperwork, the student will:

  • Keep a record of the hours they have worked.
  • Receive a direct deposit (students must sign up) or a payroll check for the hours reported.
  • Earn anywhere from $10 to $13 per hour

Hours

The hours a student works will usually be based on a student’s class schedule. The amount of pay a student earns can't exceed their total work-study amount for the year. Additionally, UNLV students can work up to a total of 20 hours per week from all UNLV employment opportunities. Students may work more than 20 hours a week during times when school is not in session if funds are available.
