It Takes a Village: Connecting Community Services to Public Schools

Join our panel of experts as we dig into the benefits of providing comprehensive services to diverse students and families on public school campuses. This approach, known as the full-service community schools framework, identifies the specific needs of students and families and partners with community organizations to provide the needed programming or supports conveniently on school campuses. They will explore:
- What defines a community school and how it’s evolved in Nevada
- Discuss programming implemented as a component of a community school
- Evaluate the impact of this programming on student and family outcomes
- Recommendations for implementing a community school model
They’ll also share their experience with , a partnership with the City of Las Vegas Department of Youth Development and Social Initiatives and the Clark County School District on 14 elementary school campuses.

Speakers
Joseph Morgan, Ph.D.
Professor, Chair and Interim Director, CREW Disability Center
Joseph Morgan is a professor of special education and chair of the Department of Early Childhood, Multilingual, and Special Education. His research focuses on:
- Supporting the social-emotional development and subsequent post-secondary outcomes of culturally and linguistically diverse students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD)
- Developing tiered intervention systems to support the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse students attending high-needs schools
- Teacher education, both for traditional and alternative pathways licensure programs
- Ongoing professional development across the career continuum for in-service special education teachers
He has been active in the implementation of a full-service community schools framework in Southern Nevada, partnering on these initiatives with the City of Las Vegas and the Clark County School District since 2016. He is currently the principal investigator of a $2.5 million full-service community schools grant funded through the US Department of Education and a $500,000 award funded through the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services. Both of these projects are focused on implementing community schools frameworks on seven elementary school campuses in Southern Nevada.
