What
This program is intended for students interested in having a short-term research experience abroad. It provides undergraduate students with an opportunity to experience hands-on research with a faculty mentor in the area of interest to both the professor and the student.
Participating students must be enrolled in EGG 499 Research Internship for Engineering and Computer Sciences (1-3 credits, depending on arrangements with the faculty). Students enrolled in this course will be trained in laboratory safety and on how to find information in scientific databases. Furthermore, students will receive training through the Ethics in Research Seminar offered by the College of Engineering.
After completing this research internship experience, students will:
- Be aware of safety procedures for laboratory research.
- Be proficient in finding literature in scientific databases.
- Be aware of the importance of ethics in research.
- Prepare a poster on the research he/she has performed where the major elements of the Scientific Methods are identified including problem statement, hypotheses, experimental plan for hypotheses testing, expected results, data interpretation and analysis, and conclusions. Orally present the poster to a forum of fellow students and faculty.
The grading in this course will be Pass/Fail. Students must complete at least 70% of assigned tasks to receive a satisfactory grade.

Who
While this research opportunity would be a good learning experience for any student, it is primarily intended for undergraduate students at the junior or senior level.
How to Apply
The application is online. You must enroll as a non-degree seeking student. Interested students can apply to start any time of the year. The College of Engineering International Exchange Program Coordinator facilitates the application process. See Frequently Asked Questions for specific criteria and how to participate and apply.
The following is a summary of what you need to do, after you are accepted by a professor:
- You must enroll in EGG 499 to participate in the program. You will need to apply as a non-degree seeking student. Once you are enrolled, you will register and pay for 1 to 3 credit hours of EGG 499, depending on arrangements with the professor who will supervise your internship.
- You will need to complete the J-1 Student non-degree form. Please read the form carefully for instructions and necessary information. Fill out the form with your personal information and upload it to the shared drive. It should be saved as a DOC file. We will complete the UNLV information once we receive the completed form back from you.
- Please send your resume and official transcripts (list of classes you have taken at your university and grades) translated into English. These documents will help the COE advisor to place students in classes.
- Proof of English Proficiency. TOEFL, IELTS or PTE official Test Scores. If the teaching medium in your university is English, proof of English proficiency can be waived. However, you will need to provide official proof from an administrator at your university stating that. Alternatively, you can provide an official statement from an administrator at the university you currently attend indicating your level of English proficiency.
- A copy of an unexpired passport. Passport should be valid for at least six months after the end of your internship. Provide a clear PDF file copy of the passport page that includes your picture.
- Copies of all previous DS-2019s that have been issued to you in the past two years. If you have not been in the U.S. as a student, this item does not apply.
- Proof of financial capability, in English, converted to U.S. dollars. This should be financial certification, a letter from a financial institution, a bank, or sponsoring agency showing that you have a total of at least $1,612 per each month of stay (living expenses) plus tuition and fees. The cost of 1 credit hour tuition and fees for the Spring 2017 semester is about $811. Please remember that the cost of EGG 499 changes from semester to semester and may be somehow different if you are planning to be at UNLV during summer (after the middle of May).
- A verification letter signed by a representative from the home school stating that you are enrolled in engineering, computer science, or a closely related program. The letter should state that you are in good academic standing. It should also state the period of the internship and your expected graduation date (MM/DD/YEAR).
FAQ for Short-Term Internship
Search the College website under Academic Programs and go to the department you are interested in. Search the faculty directory and identify the professors you are interested in working with. Once you have identified the professors, email those you would like to work with. Send your unofficial transcript and resume to the professor(s) to help him/her gauge your background and experience, and copy the coordinator so that she can follow up on your request.
You must apply for the non-degree seeking program and enroll in EGG 499 to participate in the program. Application as a non-degree seeking students has a $30 fee. In addition, you need to enroll and pay for 1-3 credits of EGG 499, depending on arrangements with the faculty. The cost of EGG 499 changes from semester to semester. Please contact the International Program coordinator for an estimate of tuition cost.

Undergraduate research is generally not paid. However, some faculty members may choose to provide a small stipend to students depending on the availability of funds and student experience level.
The list below details the steps involved. For more information please email the coordinator at rosangela.wacaser@unlv.edu.
- Student contacts program coordinator (PC), COE professor, or applies on the website.
- PC informs students they must be registered for credits to engage in non-degree studies or internship. Number of credits depend upon the arrangements made with faculty.
- Professor reviews transcripts, along with a resume, and informs PC of acceptance/denial.
- PC sends tuition estimate to student and prepares a draft acceptance letter and syllabus and then sends it to professors to be edited.
- If a student or hosting professor agrees to cover tuition cost, PC directs the student to apply as a non-degree seeking student. It takes at least 48 hours to receive a student's ID.
- Student emails student's ID to PC. PC emails the student a list of required documents for J-1 visa application. PC shares documents received with UNLV's International Student and Scholar Services for DS-2019 processing.
- International Student and Scholar Services contacts student to create an e-ship account for mailing original DS-2019 form.
- International Student and Scholar Services sends original DS-2019 to the student for J-1 visa application with U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
- Student informs PC when the visa is issued. PC shares student's ID and transcripts with COE advising center, which advises student via email on how to enroll in classes.
