Positions Available

The number of positions available varies from 3-5.

Clinical training and supervision is offered for graduate students in clinical psychology, couple and family therapy, clinical and mental health and social work.

Offers for all training positions are contingent upon a successful background check.

CAPS accepts graduate students for practicum training from various programs. All applicants must meet minimum requirements according to their specific program. Due to differences in course sequencing and schedules, review for applications occurs on an ongoing basis. Please view the accordion below to see more detailed information about specific program requirements.

Required courses to have been completed prior to applying to CAPS:

  • MFT 764 – Principles and Practices of MFT
  • MFT 762 – Diagnosis in Marriage and Family Therapy
  • MFT 765 – Principles and Practices of MFT II
  • MFT 771 – Ethical and Legal Issues in Marriage and Family Therapy
  • MFT 773 – Marriage and Family Practicum – must have been in a mental health setting

Courses that may be taken concurrently to CAPS training:

  • MFT 725 Diversity in Marriage and Family Therapy

Required courses to have been completed prior to applying to CAPS:

  • CED 701 – Intro to Counseling
  • CED 727 – Counseling Process and Procedures
  • CED 743 – Ethical and Legal Issues in Counseling
  • CED 733 – Introduction to Group Counseling
  • CED 741 – Practicum – must have been in a mental health setting

Courses that may be taken concurrently to CAPS training:

  • CED 732 – Advanced Multicultural Counseling

Required courses to have been completed prior to applying to CAPS:

  • SW 715 – Human Behavior in the Social Environment
  • SW 719 – Foundation Practicum – must have been in a mental health setting
  • SW 729 – Foundation Practicum – must have been in a mental health setting

Applicants are strongly encouraged to take SW 776 Legal and Ethical Issues as a summer elective prior to their practicum at CAPS.

Courses that may be taken concurrently to CAPS training:

  • SW 740 – Direct Practice I
  • SW 747 – DSM: Assessment and Diagnosis
  • SW 705 – Social Work Practice with Therapeutic Groups (optional)

Advanced Standing Program Requirements

Required courses to have been completed prior to applying to CAPS:

  • SW 707 – Contemporary Issues in Diversity
  • SW 776 – Legal and Ethical Issues in Social Work
  • SW 734 – Advanced Standing Practice Seminar
  • SW 736 – Advanced Standing Integrative Seminar

BSW Practicum – must have been in a mental health setting, or must have had previous professional counseling or group experience.

Courses that may be taken concurrently to CAPS training:

  • SW 740 – Direct Practice I
  • SW 747 DSM: Assessment and Diagnosis

  1. Completed graduate-level coursework (700-level) in:
    • Theories of counseling/psychotherapy.
    • Basic counseling techniques, methods, or skills that are empirically supported.
    • Ethics and professional practice (either as a graduate course or as a discrete unit in a professional issues course).
    • Diagnosis using the most recent version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM).
  2. Clinical Training
    • A minimum of at least one semester of graduate-level, supervised clinical experience in individual counseling. A year or more of supervised clinical experience is strongly preferred.
    • Prior supervised work at a clinical mental health facility may be considered in fulfilling the clinical requirement.

Application Materials

Applicants for the Practicum Trainee position need to complete and submit the following to CAPS:

  • The CAPS Practicum application form
  • A current resume/curriculum vita.
  • A copy of current transcripts.
  • A cover letter explaining how a practicum at CAPS would fit with your short- and long-term professional goals.
  • The names of two references: Preferably one from a current/previous site supervisor and another from a faculty member in your academic department who can address your qualifications and clinical skills.
  • Application deadline is November 25th for GA and Practicum training positions.
