Dear University Community,
I am happy to announce that Dr. Tony Terrell will serve as the new Faculty Athletics Representative for the 2024-2025 fiscal year.
The Faculty Athletics Representative plays a key role in supporting the successful relationship between academics and athletics at UNLV, and serves as a liaison to our 500-plus student athletes. They also represent the institution’s faculty in its relationships with the Mountain West Conference and the NCAA, which includes certification of student athletes for competition per NCAA regulations and guidelines, and advocacy for related waivers or exemptions.
Dr. Terrell, director of advising and recruitment for the UNLV Honors College, is a three-time graduate of UNLV (B.A.’02, M.Ed.’07, Ph.D.’12), UNLV Athletics Hall of Famer (football), and Rebel Pride Ambassador. He has been a higher education professional for 20 years at UNLV and has strong commitment to student learning, service, and advancement. Working with students as an admissions/recruitment counselor, academic advisor, professor, and administrator gives him a comprehensive understanding of the student experience and student needs from pre-college through graduation.
Dr. Terrell replaces longtime theatre professor Brackley Frayer, who has served in the role of Faculty Athletics Representative for the past 16 years. During his tenure, Frayer served five university presidents and four athletic directors, and he sat on and twice served as chair of the joint council for the Mountain West Conference.
His tenure at UNLV extends 28 years, including eight years as chair of the Theatre Department. Frayer will continue to work at UNLV within the College of Fine Arts next year, and he will be featured later this spring in the UNLV News Center and in the fall edition of UNLV Magazine for his years of service to UNLV Athletics and the university.
Although the official transition occurs July 1, 2024, Frayer has already begun onboarding Dr. Terrell this spring and their work together will continue through June. Please join me in thanking them for their work as Faculty Athletics Representatives, and for their continued service to UNLV.
Warm Regards,
Warm Regards,
President Keith E. Whitfield, Ph.D.
