University of Nevada Las Vegas has 11 advising centers staffed with 54 full-time professional academic advisors. Academic advisors assist students in class planning, major and minor selections, career and internship options, graduate school opportunities, and research possibilities. In addition, they work with every department on campus to bring resources to students. Students are encouraged to meet with their academic advisor every semester.
- Collaborate to Graduate. This motto was adopted in an effort to draw attention to the importance of academic engagement. Students meet with academic advisors starting with New Student Orientation up to Graduation. Students can collaborate with their academic advisor and gain useful information on a variety of campus resources to enhance their educational experience and obtain their degree.
- Graduation Visualization. Students are encouraged to meet with their academic advisors at least once a semester. One size does not fit all. Advisors listen to the needs and wants of each student to collectively devise a graduation visualization plan towards degree completion. In 2013, NSHE announced 15-to-Finish and academic advisors are encouraging students to enroll in 15 credits per semester or 30 credits a year to graduate in 4 years.
- Advisors are Connected to Campus. Monthly meetings bring together the 11 advising centers to share updates, best practices, and future projects. A portion of these meetings are dedicated to presentations from various campus offices and units, including financial aid & scholarships, career services, international programs, veteran services, admissions, registrar, CAEO, and tutoring. Advisors connect with these areas to exchange updates, issues, concerns, and projects to better the student’s college experience.
- Advisors are Connected Globally. All UNLV academic advisors are members of National Academic Advising Association (NACADA). By attending conferences, webinars, institutes, seminars, research symposiums, and participating in commissions, interest groups, and volunteering for community outreach projects advisors stay current on advising trends and research.
- Do More Than Make Class Schedules. UNLV academic advisors assist with campus initiatives including Retention, Progression, & Completion, New Student Orientation, Reno and Clark County College Fairs, Scholar Events, and Rebel Previews. In addition, the Executive Office of Academic Advising hosts Rebels R.I.S.E (Reflection. Involvement. Scholarship. Engagement), Collaborate to Graduate: Academic Advising Preview, and Family Day (held in the Fall).
