Placement Tests

Placement is required for enrollment into your first English, math, foreign language, and chemistry courses. Below you will find information regarding placement for these subjects. For placement into courses not listed here, please contact the individual departments.

Mathematics (MATH) and English (ENG)

UNLV uses your ACT or SAT test scores as the basis for placement into your first English or math course. See where you place based on your current test score. If you do not have an ACT or SAT test score or you would like to improve your current placement, there are a few options available to you on campus.

English Composition Placement

The English Placement Assessment is free. Students will submit a reflective self-assessment letter online through WebCampus. The process of taking the English placement assessment is delivered through Webcampus/Canvas. Students will need to activate their ACE Account and then follow steps on the Composition page.

ALEKS Math Placement

ALEKS is a powerful online tool that focuses on the strengths and weaknesses of a student's mathematical knowledge, reports its findings to the student, and then provides the student with access to instructional learning modules for bringing this knowledge up to an appropriate level for better course placement.

You can find sign-up and other important information on the ALEKS Mathematics Placement Assessment at the ALEKS Placement page.

Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry requires that all students complete a placement examination prior to enrollment in either CHEM 121 (General Chemistry I) or CHEM 103 (Preparatory Chemistry). This is a multiple-choice assessment of the student's level of preparation in chemistry and basic math skills. For additional information, including placement score requirements and registration details, please visit the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry website, or contact them by phone at 702-895-3510.

Foreign Language

Students with previous foreign language exposure wishing to enroll in a language course at UNLV are encouraged to complete the free foreign language written placement exam offered by the Department of World Languages and Cultures. Please contact the department at 702-895-3431 or in BEH 342 for more information.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

For students whose first language is not English, the English Language Center offers ESL courses to aid in the language-learning process. The ELC places students into ESL courses based on their placement test. To arrange the ESL placement test, contact the ELC at 702-895-1264. International students planning to attend UNLV must earn a satisfactory score on an English placement test. The ELC offers the Michigan Test of English Language Proficiency (MTLEP) regularly throughout the school year. Contact the ELC at 702-895-1264 for more information.
