UNLV's department of psychology will conduct a series of anxiety prevention workshops this spring for adolescents who experience moderate levels of anxiety. The free, one-day seminars will teach participants and their parents anxiety management skills, including special muscle relaxation and breathing techniques.
To be eligible, participants must be between the ages of 12 and 17 years and be fluent in English. Parental permission and attendance is required. Ideal participants are those youth who already experience a moderate level of anxiety but who are not currently receiving psychological or drug treatments for anxiety-related conditions and who do not have behavior problems.
"Participants will benefit from these seminars by learning a host of coping skills that have been shown to dramatically reduce anxiety," said Christopher Kearney, associate professor of psychology at UNLV. "Ultimately, the goal of these workshops is to prevent anxiety from becoming a big problem in the lives of Las Vegas youth."
Those who are eligible for the seminars must complete an assessment consisting of questionnaires and a brief interview. Upcoming seminars are scheduled every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday through June 13, and possibly beyond.
