The University Forum lecture series will conclude its 1996-97 season with presentations on April 14 and 28.
On April 14, Claudia Keelan, an assistant professor of English at UNLV, will read from The Secularist, a book of poems that won the Contemporary Poetry Series award from the University of Georgia Press. Her presentation is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Frank and Estella Beam Hall, Room 242.
The University Forum lecture series is free and open to the public.
The Secularist is described as a book that asks hard questions of a world where "bond cannot be proven." The voices heard in this collection struggle between the wish to believe in God and the necessity of believing in people in a culture in which, increasingly, they do not believe in themselves.
"Female Icons: From Marilyn Monroe to Susan Sontag (The Biographer's Challenge)" will be the topic when biographer Carl Rollyson speaks on April 28.
His presentation is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Classroom Building Complex, Room A-110.
Rollyson will discuss several of his subjects, including Monroe, Sontag, Lillian Hellman, Martha Gellhorn, and Rebecca West, and he will talk about why these women are icons.
The University Forum lecture series is sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and underwritten by the UNLV Foundation. For additional information on the series, call the College of Liberal Arts at (702) 895-3401.
