Applicants are being sought for the Jean Nidetch Scholarship for fall 1997 at UNLV, according to Conee Spano, director of the Jean Nidetch Women's Center.
The Jean Nidetch Scholarship Fund was established in 1995 by Nidetch, founder of Weight Watchers International. Up to 10 annual scholarships of $2,000 are awarded based on criteria established by Nidetch and UNLV.
To qualify, male or female students must be accepted to UNLV as freshmen for the fall 1997 semester; have a minimum grade point average of at least 3.0; demonstrate financial need according to UNLV criteria; and demonstrate in a one-page essay that they have overcome some adversity or hardship.
Interested students must complete a UNLV scholarship application and provide a letter of recommendation supporting their need and hardship. Recommendation letters must be from a professional person such as a teacher, guidance counselor, or principal.
The deadline for applications is April 15.
