Approximately 100 elementary school students will be on the UNLV campus April 25 to participate in closing ceremonies as the Peer Mentoring Program wraps up its activities for the 1996-97 academic year.
The closing ceremonies will take place from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. in the Moyer Student Union, Rooms 201 and 202.
Formally known as the UNLV Math, Science, and Engineering Club, the Peer Mentoring Program sends UNLV students into elementary schools to work with youngsters in grades one through five on lessons in math, science, and engineering. The UNLV students, whose majors are math, science, engineering, or education, also serve as role models for the youngsters.
The objectives of the program are to instill a college-bound attitude in the youngsters, to increase their interest in math and science, and to build a bridge to the future so that the professional fields related to math, science, and engineering no longer lack appropriate ethnic minority representation.
Schools that participated in this year's program were Hoggard Magnet School and Booker Elementary School.
Two local businesses, Mel Green Architects and Bechtel of Nevada, sponsored this year's program.
