Educators interested in learning how to teach students ways of using their mathematical skills to learn basic economic principles can participate in a credit-granting workshop later this month.
Sponsored by the Nevada Council on Economic Education in conjunction with the Barbara Schick Center for Economic Education at UNLV and the State Farm Foundation, the workshop will take place 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 16 and 17. Participants must attend both days of the workshop and complete a take-home assignment to receive credit; the workshop should be of particular interest to educators who teach math, economics, and social studies.
The workshop will take place in the northwest campus auditorium, Room 242, of Clark High School, 4291 W. Pennwood Ave. To register, call the Schick Center at 895-3608.
The lessons planned for each day are geared for a variety of secondary mathematics courses, said John Mundy, executive director of the Nevada Council on Economic Education and programs coordinator of the Schick Center. The first day is foundational and is targeted at a mathematics level of first-year algebra. It is subtitled "Understanding the Mathematics of Supply and Demand."
The second day will concentrate on using graphing, linear equations and other basic algebra fundamentals as instructors and participants discuss prices, output, shortages, surpluses, ceilings, floors, competition, and similar economic principles.
The workshop will be taught by both economics and math instructors. All materials will be provided. A continental breakfast will be available at 8 a.m. each day.
