Jacob D. Skousen (Educational Psychology, Leadership, and Higher Education) and Ellianna Rodriguez (former graduate student in the Higher Education program and currently a UNLV Admissions Counselor/Evaluator) published an article, "The Costs of a Free and Public Education: An Analysis of a School District's Student Fees," in the BYU Education & Law Journal. The purpose of the study was to respond to the research question: What school fees are charged in middle schools and high schools in one large, urban public school district? Publicly accessible data were collected from 47 secondary schools in the fifth largest school district in the U.S. Through the use of descriptive statistics, the findings included a description of over 2,000 school fees. The school fees assessed to students and their families range significantly across middle and high schools and the costs to enroll in specific courses could be significant. These findings provide another example of the ways in which schools may structure inequity.
