Drs. Ahmed Mohamed and Edward Lynch, along with pediatric resident Dr. Alice Trieu (all Dental) , "Silver Diamine Fluoride Versus Sodium Fluoride for Arresting Dentine Caries in Children: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis," which appears in the current issue of Scientific Reports, Nature. The article systematically reviewed the dentine caries arrest capabilities of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and sodium fluoride (NaF).
The research found SDF statistically more effective in dentine caries arrest among primary teeth during the 18- and 30-month clinical examinations. In fact, SDF showed nearly double the effectiveness compared to NaF at 30 months. The study concluded that SDF is the more effective caries management reagent, and acknowledged a need for further clinical research to consolidate the findings of the systematic review.
